On Buying Music

My first job after moving to Cologne, Germany in 2000 was to work for a record store called Underdog Records, a smallish type of record store that you hardly find anymore today, independently-run for over ten years by my friend Hoffi. It’s probably the best record store in Germany and attracts music & vinyl lovers from around the world.

Working for a record store was the best way to stay updated about new bands and music. You could follow which bands and records were getting traction, we’d promote shows, have music-nerd conversations with customers and get invited to pretty much every show in town.

Fast-forward ten years, a lot has changed. Many record stores like Underdog are gone and only few remain in business. Digital has taken over, people who still buy records mainly buy digital records. (Side note: a while ago, Hoffi mentioned that vinyl was still the main revenue driver and that has been for years. There are still vinly-lovers out there)

Which brings me to the point.

Last week, I finally managed to set up my turntable, amplifier and a pair of new speakers. I moved from Cologne to Munich to Berlin, the stuff still in boxes, listening to music on my iPod, laptop or the web.

Friday, I hopped on a Skype chat with Hoffi and asked him if he could put together a package for me with a set of vinyl I’d like to buy. Of course he said yes so I’m expecting a nice box full of the following records sometime this week.

Elliott Smith - Figure 8
Elliott Smith - From A Basement On The Hill
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Owen Pallett - Heartland
Daniel Benjamin - There’s A Monster Under Your Deathbed
Get Well Soon - Angry Young Man 7”
Midlake - The Courage Of Others
Kristofer Aström - Sinkadus

(Completing my Elliott Smith collection as you can see)

There is something religious about putting up a record and headphones to listen to a record you cherish, standing up to switch to the B-side and start over again. I forgot how much I love it.

I’m buying more music than ever before and I am happy about it.

Mumford & Sons - But My Head Told My Heart

Bijan posted Little Lion Man, I’m throwing in a second one here. Great band from London (though they could also easily be from Boston), debut album is out October 5.

iNudge - today’s time killer. This works like the Tone Matrix and lets you combine different patterns. Go ahead and make your own Postal Service tracks. Ha.
Here’s my two-minute composition.

The Little Ones - Lovers Who Uncover

Listening to their more recent album released last year, but that song came up on my iPod on my way to the office so I’ll go with that one from their album Sing Song.

Liam Frost & Martha Wainwright - Your Hand In Mine

Don’t really remember where I stumbled upon this one. Besides being your rather typical British pop tune (Liam reminds me of the singer from Starsailor a bit - no offence here) the lady on Liam’s side Martha Wainwright, Rufus’ sister, my favorite sibling musicians since Oasis broke up last week.

Here’s where Liam explains how it came to the duet.

Extra kudos for the title of the album that comes out September 14th: “We Ain’t Got No Money, Honey, But We Got Rain”

Fate Lions - Astronaut

Posted a first Fate Lion track yesterday and it really was stuck on repeat the entire afternoon. Returning home from the office, I listened to Astronaut for the rest of the evening. In this track, the singer reminds me of my friend Garrett Klahn (ex-Texas Is The Reason, Solea and currently Atlantic/Pacific) a lot.

Listen to the full record here.

Fate Lions - All You Do Is Crazy

Found this little gem on SoundCloud. That’s right, even if it appears that SoundCloud is a platform with mostly electronic music (which is mostly true), there are some really great indie bands represented.

Over the weekend, I searched for artists tagged “indie” or “folk” and these guys came up. This is a great pop song and it has been stuck on repeat for most of the afternoon. Listen to the full album here and if you like it, buy here.

The Dandy Warhols - The Last High- The Dandy Warhols Are Sound

Excellent track from their recent re-issue of Welcome To The Monkey House which was released in July with the original mix by Russell Elavedo as oppsed to the one released by Capitol.

Extra-kudos because originally they’re from Portland, Oregon.

Monochrome - High Five

Monochrome is one of the best and at the same time one of the most underrated bands in Germany. Their latest record Cache is already a year old and I kinda lost track of the band in the past years. I regularly bump into Marc (their singer who moved to Berlin recently) and after seeing him on Saturday I checked what Monochrome had been up to. I liked what I heard so much that I bought Cache last night. It’s a great post-rock/pop album and I’d urge you to give it a go.

Other great tracks include: Times New Roman, Parallax, Truc and Stern.

Oh, and Britt: I’m quite sure you’d like that record.

Deer Tick - Nebraska (Bruce Springsteen cover)

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m not too much into covers and it usually takes a lot for me to like one. But every now and then I stumblr upon something I like. Here’s one: Deer Tick from Providence, Rhode Island cover the boss’s Nebraska. Make sure to check out their other tracks, great stuff.

For the record: had a hard time picking my daily song and struggled between this one and two others. But since Bijan’s loyal to cover Friday, I’m joining the gang.

My buddies Eric & Henrik over at SoundCloud have outdone themselves again and just released The SoundCloud Player. It’s a webbased iTunes-like player that lets you browse most all of the music on SoundCloud. That’s way cool and a great to discover tracks on the plaform. Here’s what else you can do with it:

Find and play all tracks from SoundCloud

Save playlists to your Google Account
Make smart playlists based on genre, BPM, etc

Share your ready-made playlists with your friends

Collaborate in making the best playlists ever

Well done, pals. Keep it up.

They Might Be Giants -The Mesopotamians

It’s Friday and not long before the weekend starts. Perfect timing for a perfect pop song. Found this over at Pasta Primavera in today’s Run Down. It’s the last second on their 07 album called ‘The Else’. Gotta run, we’re having an office drink-up.

Lovely video of a lovely band called Mascott from New York, that I just discovered on this Norwegian music blog called EarDrumsMusic. Instant feed-subscription. Too bad the song is that short.

Browse around the blog, they feature some great unheard bands (to me at least).

Download another great track here.
