Ms. Lovell passed away on November 26th at the age of 107.

In a moving recording, the oral history project MyStuy.org captured the story of the Lovells who live(d) in the Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood of north-central Brooklyn.

I’ve been thinking about oral history a lot lately. We’re mostly focused on creating new things all the time and easily forget that there is meaning in preserving what’s behind us.

Report: Inside the Freedom Tower and World Trade Center Memorial at Lower Manhattan | danpatterson

Interesting report by Dan Patterson about the construction of the Freedom Tower. Apparently a lot of the construction workers were also heavily involved in the clean-up of ground zero.

SoundCloud Global Meetup Day :: 5 October 2011

It’s only one week to go until our Global Meetup Day. SoundClouders around the world are gearing up for our Global Meetup Day next Wednesday. Want to know what sound means to the people of San Francisco? Dublin? New Yorkers?

Various meetup organizers around the world have been kind enough to share with us their plans for the day. Take a sneak peak and find out how to get involved on the blog!

NYC friends! There is a special audio meetup organized by our two Community Fellows in NYC. Join them to find and record what people think is the best pizza in the City.

    RSVP on this Meetup event.

For the most interesting person this week, here is Ray Tempus, author of the “15 Point Guide to Peeing in the City.”  I caught up with him outside Gramercy Park a couple of weeks ago where he was selling his $2 guides.

This guide isn’t just New York City folks, its universal.  I picked up a copy, and I’m not the only one.  He’s sold nearly 80,000.

Ray is a trip and worth the listen.  He calls himself “Fred Flintstone in the age of George Jetson.”

I’m thankful to hear that the hurricane wasn’t as bad as expected.  I even got a few extra days in Berlin out of of it!  I’ll be in Carroll Gardens starting Wednesday, and looking for people to interview there.

A “15 Point Guide to Peeing in the City”? Do not miss. I have a feeling that the weekly quest for the most interesting people in NYC neighborhoods will be an interesting one.

Meet Ed Casabian, also known as The NYC Nomad. Ed’s been living in a different neighborhood in New York City every week and had been documenting his adventures on a blog and Tumblr. When we heard about this, we said Hey, that would be an epic project for our Community Fellowship! and when we spoke to Ed about documenting it with sound, he was game.
Ed’s currently with us in Berlin and once back in NYC, his weekly quest will be to find the most interesting person in the neighborhood he’s currently living in and interview them using the SoundCloud iPhone app. Awesome!
Follow The NYC Nomad on Tumblr to stay updated about his progress. Oh and if you want to join Ed to find and record/interview the most interesting person in the neighborhoods of your city, there’s a group for that.

This interview comes from my week in Stuyvesant Town where I met Bernie, who has lived there since 1949.  Everyday, around 2:30pm, you’ll find Bernie hitting golf balls.  Say hello - he has far more stories than I’ve captured in this short five minute interview. If he likes you, he might even offer you a golf lesson.

He made me guess his age and I though he was in his 70’s.

Wow. An 4-room apartment in Sty Town used to cost $79 per month. Also: I love Bernie’s accent, you will too.

What the NYC Startup World Needs (and Doesn’t Need)

An excellent post by Nate Westheimer in response to Chris Dixon’s original post.  I think Nate is spot on in his assessment and critique.  The fact is that the push by NYC government to lure a world-class engineering campus to NYC is brilliant.  This is just one of many critical initiatives and events that will help NYC grow as a global hub for technology innovation and commerce.  Definitely read Nate’s post and Chris’ post as well.

Thanks for the recap and linking to both post, Mark! I read both today but hadn’t had the chance to post.

    New York City

Suit up, New York. Noël’s coming to town Feb 7-14. Can’t wait to finally meet some of you cats in person. My schedule is filling up nicely so if you’d like to meet, email me. Current loose schedule as follows:

Mon 7: free for the day, lunch booked, will be in the Union Square area

Tue 8: in Brooklyn and booked for the day & dinner

Wed 9: free for the day, lunch booked, SoundCloud meetup in Brooklyn at 8pm

Thu 10: free for the day; word on the street is that there will be a Berlin meets NYC Tumblr meetup that night. Save the date, details to follow.

Fri 11: free for the day

Sat 12: Music Hack Day NYC

Sun 13: Music Hack Day NYC

Mon 14: free for the day until 3pm, flying out of JFK at 6pm.

    Two questions:

    1. Where and what’s the best pre-paid data/voice sim card to get for iPhone 3GS?
    2. Do you have friends Airbnb’ing their places in Manhattan that you could recommend?
