Mumford & Sons’ music sounds authentic. There are no synths, no manufactured beats. It sounds like life. And last time I checked, we’re all human. Don’t you want something to touch your heart and soul? Great times are ahead. Acts like Mumford & Sons are leading the way. There are no rules. Practice, innovate, shoot for the stars. Do it your own way. Know that the audience is ready. Nothing touches people like music, no movie, no TV show, no Facebook wall. Get it right and people will bond to you forever. Mumford & Sons came to play last night. And so did the audience. It’s not about show, it’s about communion, a relationship. The band wore no outfits, performed no stunts, they just played music. And that was enough. More than enough. Because it’s not about what you see, but what you hear.

    And feel.

I felt I was someplace special last night. At the intersection of what once was and what is gonna be. Rather than be afraid, walk back to what I know, I decided to put my belongings over my shoulder and walk into the future with a younger generation that is not envious of what we built, but is eager to go its own way.

Mumford & Sons | Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medecine Show cover)

The Mumfords covering a song that originally was an unfinished Bob Dylan song turned co-writing effort of both Dylan and Secor? Yes please.

Speaking of Bob Dylan: in August, we had Ólöf Arnalds up on our rooftop terrace for an acoustic live session and she wrapped up with a cover of Bob Dylan’s She Belongs To Me, click-through to watch the video below:

    Happy cover Friday.

Matthew & The Atlas | I Will Remain

Ian Hooper dropped four of Matthew’s tracks to my Spotify inbox and I Will Remain has been stuck on replay for an hour and is the stand-out track from his EP To The North which I just got it from iTunes. Hush hush, go and grab it.

By the way, Matthew releases via Communion Records, Mumford & Sons’ label.

Mumford & Sons - Cousins (Vampire Weekend cover live on BBC Radio 1)

I posted the video before (you have to watch it) and following up with the audio post of the song. I’m not a big Vampire Weekend fan but love everything about the Mumfords and Marcus’ voice in particular. This version is brilliant. More from the same session:

Mumford & Sons - Cousins (Vampire Weekend Cover) - Live on BBC Radio 1

Ok, not a Vampire Weekend fan but this is E.P.I.C! What a great band. My favorite part starts at 3:11 into the song.

My Favorite Albums Of the Year

It’s always hard to select your favorite records of the year. My list will include loyal companions no matter which year they were released and are in no particular order:

The Decemberists - The Hazards Of Love: fantastic rock opera. It takes time but then, it gets you. Listen: The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Full Moon Fever: at one point this year, I listened to this record for two weeks straight. Listen: Free Fallin

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More: revelation of the year. Like Bijan said: this album is pure fun, discovered them on SoundCloud.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - s/t: I first heard them in February and knew they’d end up on my list. Listen: Young Adult Friction.

Get Well Soon - Rest Now, Weary Head: both the album and EP were released in 08 but I completely missed them. This is Germany’s best band and they’re releasing a new record in January. From the album: If This Head Is Missing, I’ve Gone Hunting and from the EP: It’s Just Friendly Fire.

Phantogram - Eyelid Movies: Both Bat For Lashes and The Xx got all the hype but Phantogram is making my list. Listen: When I’m Small.

Blacklist - Midnight Of The Century: putting some dark into this list. My long-time friend from Brooklyn, Glenn, plays the drums in Blacklist and there’s so much The Cult, Joy Division and early U2 in this record. My album of the summer. Listen: Flight Of The Demoiselles.

Jay Farrar & Ben Gibbard - Music from Kerouac’s Big Sur: introduced to me by Bijan, I wish I’d have had that album with me when I took the Highway 1 from LA to San Francisco passing Big Sur in April of this year. Great memories. Listen: California Zephyr.

Neil McSweeney - Shoreline: another SoundCloud discovery, Neil recorded, produced and released this record all by himself. Listen: Side To The Sun.

The Builders And The Butchers - Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well: Folk on steroids. Just like the Mumfords, this album makes me want to pull an all-nighter with my friends. Listen: Black Dresses.

    Honorable Mentions:

Alberta Cross - Broken Side Of Time: ATX is one of my most-played tracks of the year according to my Last.fm stats. Hat tip to Dave for that one.

Great Late Swimmers - Lost Channels: very late addition courtesy by GCN’s list.

Reverend And The Makers - A French Kiss In The Chaos: Silence Is Talking is such a monster of an opening track. John McClure is Alex Turner’s (Arctic Monkeys) mentor.

Conor Oberst - Outer South: great record but it didn’t quite make the main list. Listening now, I wonder why I haven’t spent much more time with it. Listen: Spoiled.

The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead: another one I missed in 2008 and only discovered this year. Listen: Can’t Say No.

I’ve put together a playlist with each of the above songs and for some albums, a couple more. Click here to check it out.

Last but not least, The National, Sigur Ros and Johnny Cash’s American series always are great records to turn back to.

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

The title and lead track on Mumford & Sons’ 2009 debut LP. I am loving the shit out of this album.

Sorry for the lack of audio posts so I’m reblogging Jen today with the awesome Mumfords. If you haven’t yet, buy now.
